Japanese clearance for SonoSite
Bothell-based SonoSite Inc., which specializes in hand-held ultrasound equipment, recently announced that it has received government clearance in Japan to market its products.

“High-frequency imaging will enable Japanese physicians to use the system for breast, vascular and musculoskeletal imaging, as well as for surgical and interventional procedures,” said Kevin Goodwin, President and CEO.

Social Security forum set
The Greater Port Gardner Bay Business and Professional Women will sponsor a retirement/Social Security forum April 28 at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, 3105 Pine St. in Everett.

The forum will provide information about the present Social Security system and explore the issues involved in privatization of Social Security.

Edward Jones opens new Everett office
The financial services firm Edward Jones is opening its fifth office in the Everett area.

The office, located in the Everett Mall Plaza at 1201-C SE Everett Mall Way, next to the Red Robin restaurant, will be staffed by Eric Cumley, Investment Representative, and Beth Schuster, Branch Office Administrator.

Cingular jumps into local wireless market
Cingular Wireless has entered the Washington market.

The joint venture of SBC Communications and BellSouth represents the consolidation of GTE Cellular, Pacific Bell Wireless and others from around the country, said John Dwyer, Vice President for the Washington market.

By early this month, the company will have 50 stores in the Seattle-Spokane market areas, including eight in Snohomish County.

When GTE and Verizon wireless services combined last year, Cingular bought rights to the Seattle-Spokane market, Dwyer said. Those customers have been notified of the change in recent mailings.

Basketcases under new ownership
Basketcases Gift Baskets & Corporate Gifts recently changed ownership.

Joanna Dittemore, who started the company more than a decade ago, has sold Basketcases to Elizabeth Hoewing and Tracy Dihle.

At last month’s “Good Morning, Everett” Chamber of Commerce breakfast, Dittemore announced the sale, saying she wanted to spend more time with her family.

With the sale, Basketcases will move from Everett to Mukilteo.

ICOS drug shows promise in studies
Studies on Cialis, a new treatment for erectile dysfunction being developed through a joint venture between Bothell-based ICOS Corp. and Eli Lilly and Co., indicate men with mild to severe dysfunction may benefit from the oral drug.

Data from phase II clinical trials was published in the latest issue of the International Journal of Impotence Research.

Naval housing project gets under way
Construction of the Carroll’s Creek Landing housing development officially began last month with a groundbreaking ceremony at the site just west of Smokey Point and a round of speeches at the nearby naval support complex.

The development, a partnership between the federal government and private developer Gateway Everett, will reduce a housing deficit for U.S. Navy families by providing 288 affordable homes to military families.

Kirtley-Cole Associates Inc. of Snohomish is the general contractor on the project.

Speakers at the March 1 event included Snohomish County Executive Bob Drewel; Dan Lund, President of Gateway Development Group, the parent company of developer Gateway Everett; and Capt. Kim Buike of Naval Station Everett.

GeoEngineers opens Everett office
Consulting firm GeoEngineers Inc. has opened an office at 2924 Colby Ave. in downtown Everett.

The office will be managed by J. Gordon, a principal in the firm and also the manager of its Bellingham office.

their wares at ‘Showcase’

More than 40 businesses and organizations displayed their goods and services during “Business Showcase 2001,” a trade show sponsored by the South Snohomish County Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber kicked off the March 1 event with a business-to-business breakfast at the Alderwood Mall’s Food Court, and the booths officially opened at 9 a.m. at The Market inside the mall.

“This year, I think we’ve had more participation,” chamber President Sheryl McGrath said. “This breakfast was one of the best we’ve ever had” in terms of attendance, which numbered more than 60.

A variety of businesses and groups were represented at the show, including a number of chiropractors, the Everett Aqua Sox, Saturn of Lynnwood, the University of Phoenix, Edmonds Community College, City University, Seattle Junior Hockey Associates, the U.S. Army, and a variety of banks and credit unions, among others.

PUD offers incentive funds
Thinking about installing energy-efficient measures in your facility? The Snohomish County PUD offers incentive funds that provide reimbursement of up to 70 percent of the project cost, according to PUD literature.

Schools; nonprofit, commercial and industrial enterprises; as well as governmental entities are eligible for the funds, which are limited. Reimbursement is based on first-year energy savings. In order to qualify, projects must be authorized before work begins.

Examples of measures funded include lighting controls and fixtures; HVAC equipment including chillers and controls; compressed air systems; motors, pumps and fans; refrigeration; heat recovery systems and controls; and variable frequency drives.

The Snohomish County Tourism Bureau’s 2001 “Visitor Guide to Snohomish County” is now available.

A free copy of the guide can be picked up at Snohomish County Visitor Information centers located off exit 186 on Interstate 5 at 128th Street in south Everett, off exit 199 in the Marysville area or at 127 Ave. A in Snohomish. Free guides also are available through local chambers of commerce or at any Sno-Isle, Everett or Lynnwood library.

The Everett Community College Foundation recently honored donors in ceremonies at the college.

Windermere donates
to Habitat for Humanity

Sales associates and staff with Windermere Real Estate’s Snohomish County offices recently teamed up with the Windermere Foundation to donate $1,000 to Habitat for Humanity, according to a news release. The funds will be used to help homeless and low-income families get back on their feet.
