EvCC, biz center offer entrepreneur courses

A series of low-cost workshops for entrepreneurs and business owners is being offered by Everett Community College’s Continuing Education program and the Northwest Women’s Business Center from September through December.

Jamie Curtismith, executive director of the Northwest Women’s Business Center, will be the instructor for the courses.

The programs will focus on business planning and exploring comprehensive services, business information and advice from a variety of agencies, including the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Northwest Women’s Business Center, SCORE, regional banks and area chambers of commerce.

Times, dates and locations are available by contacting the college. Most of the workshops will be held at the Northwest Women’s Business Center, 728 134th St. SW, Suite 219, Everett; however, some are held on campus. A map will be mailed with registration confirmation.

Workshops will include:

Thinking about business
n Designing your business path: This free course offers time-saving advice, tips on cutting costs and help gathering resources and contacts. Participant will learn how to develop their own “road map” to help guide them through the entrepreneurial process. Registration is not required.

n The ABCs of entrepreneurship: Learn the necessary steps in starting and planning a business, explore ways to gather the right legal, insurance and financial advice. This intense “crash course” will give participants the basics they need if they are considering entrepreneurship or have recently started their own business. Cost of the course is $20.

n Run your business and maintain your sanity: Participants will learn how to manage the demands of owning a own business with those of being a member of a family as well as how to deal with guilt and how to take care of themselves. Strategies for getting organized, setting priorities, delegating, planning and communicating will be discussed. Cost of the course is $20.

Planning a business
n Building a Business Plan: “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” This old cliche says it all. Whether in business or just thinking about it starting a business, participants will learn about business-plan basics. Cost of the course is $20.

n The basics of money: Learn the basics of money. This non-intimidating program will cover all you need to know to learn how to deal with “money issues” in life and business. Cost of the course is $20.

Managing a business
n Managing your small business: For business owners who need a “safe place” to ask questions and explore issues, including employee theft, cost controls, taxes and govern-ment rules. Cost of the course is $20.

n E-Business: Participants will examine trends and learn about opportunities to use electronic information technology in their business, including risks and mistakes to avoid. Cost of the course is $20.

n The bottom line: This course is designed to help participants understand how money flows through a company, and most importantly, how to keep it. Participants will learn how to improve financial results by understanding the numbers that will enable them to make sound business decisions. Cost of the course is $20.

Growing a business
n Growing a business from scratch: Participants will learn the foundation for growing a business and understand the “obstacles” before they occur as well as how to recognize change, adapt to change and/or create change in their markets while developing growth strategies and contingency plans. Cost of the course is $20.

n Marketing matters: Advertising, public relations and market research will be discussed during the course, and participants will learn how to successfully sell their products and services and use cost-cutting techniques to save time and money. Cost of the course is $20.

n Finding funds to finance your passion: The role of bankers, venture capitalists, angel investors and the many financial programs available on the market will be a focus of the class. Cost of the course is $20.

n Winning contracts from the government: This free course will teach participants how they can get corporate and government buyers’ attention and win their business. Participants will gain a general understanding of the procurement process used by the federal government and how small businesses might market their goods and services to win contracts. Registration is not required.
