Aug. 5 meeting: ball fields
on agricultural land

Snohomish County Council members Jeff Sax, Gary Nelson and John Koster will hold a ball fields summit from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 5. Attending will be state Rep. Dan Kristiansen and Sen. Dave Schmidt, who will outline a course of action for the legislative session regarding the use of idle agricultural land for recreational use.

The County Council recently reaffirmed its two-year support of a bill that the two state legislators crafted, along with former state Sen. Aaron Reardon, that would allow such use of idle agricultural land. In addition, Sax said he would be bringing forward an amendment to the county’s agricultural code that would mirror the provision at the county level.

Currently, state law does not allow for land designated for agricultural commercial use to be used for recreation.

The summit, to be held in the auditorium of the Snohomish County PUD building in Everett, will be open to the public. For more information, call Sax’s office at 425-388-3494.

Mukilteo Farmers Market opens
Local food producers have a new venue to sell their goods with the opening of the Mukilteo Farmers Market in July.

The effort, spearheaded by resident Eden Trenor, runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays from July 22 until September at the ball field at 304 Lincoln Ave., next to the Rosehill Community Center.

Although it will focus only on food items in the beginning, the market could expand into crafts later, said Trenor, a member of the state Farmers Market Association.

With the addition of the Mukilteo market, Snohomish County is home to seven farmers markets, including those in Bothell, Edmonds, Marysville, Snohomish, downtown Everett and the Everett waterfront.

For more information, call Trenor at 425-750-6945 or send e-mail to mukilteofm@care2.com.
