Naval
Station Everett
wins energy award
SCBJ
Staff
Naval Station Everett
recently was awarded the Secretary of the Navy Energy Award for small
installations for its power-saving accomplishments last year.
An energy efficiency
retrofitting project is saving Naval Station Everett roughly $160,000
a year, and annual power consumption has been reduced by more than 9.8
billion BTUs, according to the base.
In the project —
which had a price tag of more than $828,000 — roughly 15 buildings were
modified to cut down on power costs. The work included replacing lighting
fixtures and upgrading heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems
at the Navy complexes in Everett and Smokey Point. The project is expected
to pay for itself in about four years.
Also, energy awareness
campaigns on the base have emphasized personal responsibility in conserving
power, and some sailors serve as energy monitors, looking for ways to
reduce energy consumption.
