Mill Creek a promise kept

A few weeks ago, United Development Corp. put the Mill Creek Country Club up for sale for a price of $7 million. At the same time, the company announced it would bow out of its nearly 28-year involvement in creating Mill Creek, which has become one of the county’s most prestigious communities.

United’s parent company, Tokyu Corp., is streamlining its global operations. Since development of the Mill Creek community it envisioned in 1973 is coming to a close, United is withdrawing from its work here as Tokyu looks elsewhere for projects.

“When UDC came to this area in 1973, we set out to create a community that offered a unique residential lifestyle never before offered in the Pacific Northwest,” said Ken Karahashi, the company’s Assistant Vice President.

I was at that first public meeting in 1973, as business editor of The Herald, watching a slide-show presentation of woods, pastures, birds and wildlife on land that was to be the site of Mill Creek. United promised that the master-planned community would be a quality project with a golf course, homes, school sites and its own retail center.

It’s commendable to see how well the company has kept its promise to the residents of Snohomish County over nearly three decades. Well done!
