ACCOUNTING
Tricia DeChenne recently joined the Edmonds CPA firm of Dewar Meeks + Ekrem PC as staff accountant.

BIOTECH
Bill Gates, Microsoft Corp.’s co-founder and chairman, is stepping down as a director of ICOS Corp. in order to serve on the board at Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Gates has served on the board of ICOS and been a major investor since the Bothell-based biotechnology company began operations in 1990. Company spokeswoman Lacy Fitzpatrick said she was not sure if ICOS would replace Gates on the board, which will consist of 10 directors after Gates leaves in February. In March, however, Robert Herbold, Microsoft’s former chief operating officer, will join the board. He was elected as a director before Gates decided to resign.

CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE
Larry Owens, president and chief executive of LD Owens Computing and Networking Services Inc., has been elected to the Mukilteo Chamber of Commerce board as chair of the membership committee.

EDUCATION
Mauri Moore of Edmonds is a new member of the Edmonds Community College board of trustees appointed by former Gov. Gary Locke. Moore replaces Mary Helen Roberts, recently elected to the Washington state House of Representatives by the 21st District. Moore is a member of the Edmonds City Council where she is chair of the community outreach committee. She is also a board member for the Edmonds Public Education Foundation.

FINANCIAL
Rob Robinson has been promoted to executive vice president and chief credit officer at Frontier Bank. He has been in banking for more than 22 years and served as president of North Sound Bank before its acquisition by Frontier Bank. He has been with Frontier for four years. Tony Devery has been promoted to vice president and real estate loan officer at Frontier Bank’s real estate department. He has more than 19 years of banking experience, and 11 of those have been with Frontier. Paul Cowles has been promoted to vice president at Frontier Bank’s Lynnwood office. Cowles has 29 years of banking experience, the last 11 years with Frontier.

Dale Terwedo of Terwedo Financial Services in Edmonds has been honored by Angel Flight West for his service in 2004. The organization provides free transportation to medical treatment for people who cannot afford it. Terwedo was one of six Washington pilots honored for making more than 10 such flights last year.

Catherine Newman has been named vice president and district manager for Wells Fargo’s North Puget Sound District. Newman leads 93 team members in 11 banking stores throughout the district, including locations in Bothell, Clinton, Edmonds, Everett, Freeland, Lynnwood and Shoreline. She previously worked as a store manager in Bellevue and was responsible for several stores on the Eastside.

GOLF
Tom Barrett has been promoted to western regional manager by Billy Casper Golf, which operates Legion Memorial and Walter Hall golf courses in Everett.

GOVERNMENT
Heather Coleman has been hired as the Port of Everett’s marina marketing and office administrator. For the past seven years, Coleman was the police administrative supervisor for the Lake Stevens Police Department, where she created and executed community outreach programs. In her new position, Coleman will prepare a marina marketing plan, manage the marina’s hospitality program and Web site, and plan advertising and promotional projects to attract boaters to the marina. Also, the port recently hired Brian Bakken and Matt Frisinger as marina maintenance apprentices. Bakken comes to the port from George Broom’s Sons in Seattle, where he worked as a rigger since 1991. He has also been a part-time Longshoreman for the Port of Seattle ILWU Local 19. Frisinger joined the port in December 2004 after being selected for the port’s Marina Maintenance Apprentice 1 program. He previously worked as a journeyman mechanic for the Lake Stevens School District.

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee in January was appointed to the Committee on Energy and Commerce in the U.S. House of Representatives for the 109th Congress. Inslee will serve as the lone Democrat from the Pacific Northwest on the panel that oversees such issues as energy, technology and health care.

HEALTH CARE
Dr. James M. Cook, a vascular surgeon with Radia Center for Vascular Disease who is on staff at Providence Everett Medical Center, has been elected as the 2005 president of the Pacific Northwest Vascular Society, which comprises about 125 vascular surgeons in Washington, Oregon and Idaho as well as Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.

MANUFACTURING
Robert Uptagrafft has joined Washington Manufacturing Services as an account manager for Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties. Uptagrafft has 25 years of experience in manufacturing, including management experience in a number of advanced electronic companies and as a marketing representative focused on promoting companies’ products and services.

NONPROFITS
Thomas Robinson has been selected to succeed Gilbert Saparto as president and chief executive of Volunteers of America Western Washington. Saparto will retire early this year after 40 years of service. Robinson has been with Volunteers of America Western Washington for nearly 24 years. He was first hired at the Western Washington affiliate in 1980 as director of the Care Crisis Response Services and in 1984 was promoted to chief operations officer. He is currently serving his third term of office on the Volunteers of America National Board of Directors.

Paul G. Smith has joined the board of directors of the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He has been employed with the Boeing Co. for 25 years and is currently responsible for business planning and program management in the information technology organization in support of the 7E7 program in Everett.

REAL ESTATE
Real estate agents Melanie Sandberg, Donald Davenport and Debra Long recently joined John L. Scott Real Estate’s Edmonds office. Sandberg, who has 15 years of real estate experience, is a member of the Board of Realtors Association. Davenport, who has more than 26 years of real estate experience, has earned the GRI designation. Long has 15 years of customer service experience, having worked for Nordstrom and Costco. Also, Ted Barger has been appointed vice president of network operations for the John L. Scott Network, the franchise division of John L. Scott Real Estate. In his new position, Barger will be serving as a liaison between the affiliates and John L. Scott’s Network entities. He has eight years of experience in real estate franchise sales and operations management and 15 years of real estate experience.

Sales associates Eileen Ellefsen, Brian Sullivan and Cailin Sullivan have joined Preview Properties Inc.’s Everett office, while sales associate Jason Hoff has joined the company’s Bothell office.

TECHNOLOGY
Stephen Reynolds has joined the board of directors of Everett-based Unova Inc. Reynolds is president and chief executive of Puget Energy, the parent company of Puget Sound Energy.

TRANSIT
James Kneepkens is the new director of the marketing department for Community Transit. Kneepkens formerly was the director of marketing for the Riverside Transit Agency in Riverside, Calif. Also, Martin Munguia has been hired as a public information officer for Community Transit. Munguia, a Snohomish resident, previously managed communications for the Seattle City Council.
