Seven years and $285
million later, Sound Transit has delivered on its promise to bring Sounder
commuter rail to Everett, Edmonds and eventually Mukilteo.
As of press time,
Sounder service was expected to start Dec. 21 with a special train taking
football fans to watch the Seattle Seahawks game. Regular daily service
was expected to start Dec. 22 with one train going south in the morning
and one coming back with the commute in the evening.
The Sound Transit
Board approved seven agreements at an emergency meeting Dec. 17 to allow
Sounder service to start from Everett to Seattle and from Tacoma to Lakewood.
Service to Snohomish
County will start with one roundtrip train per weekday. It eventually
will be ramped up to four trains per day.
Outgoing County Executive
Bob Drewel said he has spent 20 percent of his life working on this project.
“I think it’s a demonstration
that honest, principles, hard work still counts,” he said.
