Everett “state of the city” breakfast — Jan. 10
Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson will be the featured speaker at the second annual “state of the city” breakfast with the Everett Area Chamber of Commerce from 7 to 9 a.m. Jan. 10 at the Everett Golf & Country Club, 1500 52nd St. SE, in Everett. Stephanson will discuss the city’s plans for the new year and how they will impact community and economic development. Cost to attend is $30 for chamber members registered by Jan. 5, $35 for members registered after Jan. 5 and $50 for nonmembers. Soroptimist meetings — Jan. 11 and Jan. 25
Soroptimist International of Everett will hold its next business meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 11 and its next program meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Everett Golf & Country Club, 1500 52nd St. SE, in Everett. The volunteer organization for business and professional women works to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. The organization is committed to serving local, national and international communities, and participating actively in decision-making at all levels of society. “Financing Roadmap” program — Jan. 23
The Washington Technology Center is holding a workshop titled “Financing Roadmap: Setting a Course for Your Company’s Future” from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Seattle district office, 2401 Fourth Ave., Suite 450. The workshop is designed to help startups, early-stage firms and companies with growth potential learn about a range of financing methods available to them and to determine which path to take when seeking funding. Financing options discussed include equity capital, debt financing, partnerships and license agreements. Cost to attend is $75. Fee includes lunch and all materials. Human resources seminar — Jan. 24
The South Snohomish County Chamber of Commerce will hold a human resources seminar, “Totally HR: Being in Compliance Can Save You Big Bucks,” from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Jan. 24 at Best Western Alderwood, 119332 36th Ave. W., in Lynnwood. An overview of key human resources functions will be presented by Shannon O’Connor, the human resources representative for Paychex Inc., a national human resources, benefits and payroll service provider. Topics will include managing human resource costs, employment law, employee handbooks, government regulations, employee lawsuit preparation, harassment prevention, safe hiring and terminating practices and employment at will. BizArt Conference — Jan. 27 and 28
Puget Sound artists will learn how to turn their artistic passion into a living from other successful artists at the 2006 BizArt Conference on Jan. 27 and 28 at Everett Station, 3201 Smith Ave., in Everett. The conference offers topic-specific sessions led by artists; information about marketing, financing and business operations; and breakout sessions. Local support organizations will be on hand to communicate small-business resources available in the Snohomish County area. This year’s keynote speaker is Tom Wilson, creator of the internationally syndicated cartoon ZIGGY and co-founder of Character Matters LLC. BizArt is sponsored by the Everett Community College School of Business Design, Edmonds Community College ArtsNow, the North Central College SEA program and the Coleman Foundation. Entrepreneurship workshops

Edmonds Community College is offering a series of evening workshops for entrepreneurs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays in February at the Small Business Development Center, 728 134th St. SW, Suite 128, Everett. The workshops will be, in order, “Business Plan Writing,” “Business Basics,” “Strategic Marketing” and “Web Sites that Sell.” Attendees will learn how to develop and implement a complete business plan based on market and break-even, understand their financial statements and improve profitability, develop a strategic market niche and use the Internet to improve sales. Each class costs $99. Participants can take individual classes or the entire series. Free follow-up business advisory services will be available to participants.
