People Watching

AVIATION
Steven Larson, Samuel Wasilowski, Michael Brady, Jason Ward, Christopher Wynkoop, Charles Haberbush, Christopher McComb, Brian Collins, Matthew Sumrell and Michael Fluker have been given the Federal Aviation Administration's Diamond Award for their work at Goodrich Corp.'s Aviation Technical Services unit in Everett. The award, the highest given to aviation maintenance technicians, requires 58 hours of maintenance training, two hours of regulatory training and at least three credit hours or 40 classroom hours of college-level courses within the year.

BIOTECH
Steven Quay, chairman and chief executive of Nastech Pharmaceutical Co., has agreed to remain with the Bothell company through 2009, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Quay, who made about $393,000 in base salary last year, will make at least $500,000 in 2006, with annual increases of at least 5 percent after that under his new contract, which also includes other compensation and stock benefits.

ENGINEERING/ENVIRONMENTAL
Kristopher Hauck of Zipper Zeman Associates Inc. of Lynnwood has obtained his professional engineering license in the state of Washington. He specializes in deep foundation, retaining wall and seismic analysis. Also, Robert Sargent recently joined Zipper Zeman as a staff engineer. Sargent recently received his master's degree in civil engineering with a geotechnical engineering emphasis from the University of Washington.

Spencer Bahner has joined Sparling's Lynnwood office as an associate and information technology consultant. Also at Sparling, David Concepcion has been named office assistant-archivist, and Scott Gore has been named electrical designer.

John Weed has accepted a partnership at Higa Burkholder Associates LLC. He will succeed Noel Higa, the founding partner, who recently left the company. Weed held the position of partner and engineering manager at Bush, Roed & Hitchings Inc. in Seattle for 10 years and had been employed with that firm for 20 years. He will be responsible for managing the engineering division at Higa Burkholder Associates.. The firm also hired Alex Brost and Justin Pedersen as drafting technicians. Brost has an associate's degree in civil drafting and interned with Higa Burkholder Associates prior to his employment. Pedersen is experienced in three-dimensional CAD and has worked as a contract drafter for several years. The company also has a new receptionist, Christy Horton. She has more than eight years of experience as an administrative assistant and receptionist.

FINANCIAL
Dennis Krey has been promoted to senior vice president and manager of Coastal Community Bank's loan portfolio. Taking over Krey's former position, William H. Lewis has been hired to serve as the bank's vice president/commercial loan officer. In his new position, Krey will focus on coordinating and building the bank's service to locally owned businesses, overseeing Coastal's loan officers and working closely with branch managers. Lewis previously worked for Frontier Bank of Everett, Cowlitz Bank in Longview, and banks in Idaho and California.

Ryan Murphy has been promoted to manager at the Edmonds branch of Banner Bank. Prior to his promotion, Murphy served as a personal banker for three years at Banner Bank's Madison branch in Seattle. He also has worked for KeyBank and Bank One. Murphy received a bachelor of arts degree in marketing with a minor in finance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Daren Kloes has been hired as a vice president/loan officer with North County Bank and is primarily responsible for construction lending. His focus includes lending for land acquisition, development and spec housing. In addition, Kloes, who most recently was a vice president with Washington Mutual in charge of corporate marketing for its home loans division, provides the lead marketing role for North County Bank. He is working at North County Bank's Marysville branch.

U.S. Bank has promoted Chris Heman to lead the company's retail branch network as senior vice president and region manager for US Bank in Seattle. Heman, an Everett resident, previously was a district manager for a portion of US Bank's Seattle branches, a position he held for four years.

GOVERNMENT
Greg Dawsey has been hired as a resident engineer and inspector for the Port of Everett. With more than 28 years of construction experience, Dawsey will work mainly on the 14th Street Bulkhead Replacement project, as well as others. Prior to working for the port, Dawsey was a resident engineer for Montgomery Watson Harza on various civil infrastructure projects in the Sacramento, Calif., area. Also, Diana Kinney has been hired as the new marina maintenance helper at the port. As a maintenance helper, Kinney's main duties include grounds keeping and landscape maintenance of port properties, customer assistance and daily maintenance of the marina complex. She comes to the Port of Everett from Arlington, where she owned and managed a day-care center for the past 16 years.

HEALTH CARE
Catherine Russell has joined the Everett Clinic marketing department as the manager of media/public relations. Russell, who has experience in marketing and media relations as well as graphic design, project management and public relations, will serve as The Everett Clinic's main media contact. Also, Jen Selders, who has been with The Everett Clinic for three years as its marketing coordinator, has been promoted to marketing specialist. Selders coordinates community classes, is editor of the community newsletter, manages various projects and helps coordinate clinic activities.

NONPROFITS
The United Way of Snohomish County recently honored volunteers and community members with its annual Spirit Awards. Among those recognized were Bob Rommel and Mark Moshay, both members of the Society for Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, who received the Spirit of Labor Award for outstanding community service through the partnership between United Way and organized labor. Also, Gil Saparto received the Spirit of Snohomish County — Reeves/Sievers Founders' Award for his lifetime commitment to community service. Saparto recently retired after 27 years as head of the local Volunteers of America operation. When he arrived, the agency had 32 employees, a $350,000 budget and four programs. Today, VOA has more than 400 employees, a $20 million budget and 22 programs serving eight counties in Western Washington.

C.C. Leonard of Lynnwood has been named donor relations manager at United Way of Snohomish County. Bunny Walters of Marysville has been named child development manager.

Jennifer Busse has joined the YMCA of Snohomish County as the teen director for the Everett family branch. In her new position, Busse will oversee the operation of the Everett teen tech center, late-night programs and after-school middle school programs. Busse formerly worked for the Skagit Valley Family YMCA's teen department.

Carol Nelson, president and chief executive officer of Cascade Bank in Everett, has been named to the YWCA of King and Snohomish County's board of directors for 2005-06.

Anita Weston has been honored with the Professional Photographers of America, Inc., National Award. Weston and husband Matthew own Fowler Portraits of Edmonds.

REAL ESTATE
Gary Wellman has joined Windermere Real Estate's Lake Stevens office as a sales associate. Also, Steve Groves and John Villesvik have joined Windermere's Lynnwood office as sales associates. Groves had been a facilities supervisor with Northwest Hospital in Seattle for the past 22 years. He has past real estate experience with Red Carpet Realty in Lynnwood. Villesvik previously was a procedures analyst with Premera Blue Cross in Mountlake Terrace.

Adrienne Hulbert has joined TEAM Rielly of Everett-based Mortgage Advisory Group as a business development officer. She previously was a limited practice officer for Escrow Professionals of Washington.

Mark Hikel, MILA Inc.'s national sales director, has been promoted to president of the company and will assume day-to-day management of the firm, while founder Layne Sapp, as chief executive, will focus on projects to expand the company. Hikel joined MILA in 2000 as its executive vice president and national sales director. He previously was executive vice president at Loraca International.

TECHNOLOGY
Gregg Makuch has been promoted to vice president of marketing and administration for Bothell-based Neah Power Systems. Makuch previously was director of marketing, having joined Neah at the end of 2002. He has more than 15 years of product marketing and business management experience.
