Event connects teens
with business people

It's summertime — time for teens to get a leg-up on America's free-enterprise system and members of the business community to contribute to that learning through Washington Business Week.

The program, part of the nonprofit Foundation for Private Enterprise Education and co-sponsored by the Association of Washington Business, is open to high school students and involves a week of experiential learning about business, free enterprise, life skills and profit in a healthy society.

Based on a survey of 2004 Washington Business Week participants:

  • 96 percent said the program helped them understand what is required to run a successful business;
  • 82 percent said they were better able to work in a team environment;
  • and 79 percent said the experience encouraged them to work harder during their remaining years of high school.

Already, Washington Business Week has held its first 2005 summer camp, from June 19 through 25, at Gonzaga University. Two more are planned for the weeks ahead, with Central Washington University hosting a camp from July 24 through 30 and Western Washington University hosting the event from Aug. 7 through 13.

For businesses, Washington Business Week offers opportunities for sponsorship as well as a chance for their employees to volunteer their skills and experience to the camps, enriching the lives and minds of youth participants.
