Snohomish County’s
scenic golf courses provide many relaxing venues for mixing business with
pleasure.
Whether its Gleneagle’s
walkable course with few hills or Kayak Point’s challenging fairways,
some of the state’s best golfing destinations are close by — 18 of them.
From Harbour Pointe
to Kenwanda and Echo Falls to Ballinger Lakes there are courses suited
to almost any skill level. Looking at the options, here are pertinent
details about the county’s courses and individual profiles, as published
in The Herald’s April 2002 Golf Guide:
n
Ballinger Lakes Golf Course, 23000 Lakeview Drive, Mountlake Terrace
(425-775-6467), is a par-34, nine-hole course. Formerly known as Ballinger
Park, the course underwent a recent renovation and is distinctly different
from what it used to be. A new irrigation system means water comes into
play in the form of eight retention ponds rather than soggy fairways.
The greens are also greatly improved.
n
Battle Creek Public Golf Course, 6006 Meridian Ave. N., Marysville
(360-659-7931 or 800-655-7931), is a par-73, with an adjoining par-3 course.
It has rolling terrain with generally narrow fairways. Take note of the
No. 12 hole, the notorious “Rock Hole,” where a gigantic boulder guards
the green.
n
Blue Boy West Golf Course, 27927 Florence Acres Road, Monroe (360-793-2378),
is a par-33, nine-hole course, short but challenging and scenic. Eight
of the nine holes have water. There are young trees lining the fairways.
n
Cedarcrest Golf Course, 6810 84th St. NE, Marysville (360-659-3566),
is a par-70 course that is beginning its fourth full season after a massive
reconstruction. Drainage improvements done during the project have made
Cedarcrest much drier than in past years. Cosmetic changes also have enhanced
the appearance of the course considerably. Also, the course has opened
its long-awaited new restaurant facility.
n
Echo Falls Country Club, 20414 121st Ave. SE, Snohomish (360-668-3344),
a par-70 course, is not a long course by its yardage, but it seems to
play longer than it is. The 5,700-yard course, which is not heavily wooded,
has six par 3s, including the 18th hole, which has an island green.
n
Flowing Lake Golf Course, 5001 Weber Road, Snohomish (360-568-2753),
has a par-66 course. It’s a pretty course with no par 5s. The front nine
is tight and tree-lined, while the back nine is more open. The course
has hills and 12 ponds.
n
Gleneagle Golf Course, 7619 E. Country Club Drive, Arlington (360-435-6713),
has a par-70. Just over 6 years old, homes are being developed along its
fairways. It is not a long course, but the fairways are tight, and there
is water on all but three holes. The course does not have many hills,
and is very walkable and scenic.
n
Harbour Pointe Golf Course, 11817 Harbour Pointe Blvd., Mukilteo
(425-355-6060), is a par-72 course ranked as one of the most challenging
and scenic courses in the area. The front nine, tight with lots of water,
demands accuracy, while the back nine has more hills and puts more of
a premium on length.
n
Kayak Point Golf Course, 15711 Marine Drive, Stanwood (360-652-9676
or 1-800-562-3094), is a par-72. One of the top public courses in the
area, if not the entire state, Kayak Point is on a hillside with views
of the Olympic Mountains. Now operated by Arnold Palmer’s golf-course
management company, Kayak Point’s fairways are among the most challenging
in the county. It is also one of the hilliest courses in the area, so
be prepared for a workout if you walk. Kayak Point also offers an 18-hole
putting course.
n
Kenwanda Golf Course, 14030 Kenwanda Drive, Snohomish (360-668-1166
or 866-300-1166, www.kenwandagolf.com), is a par-69 course, fairly open
on rather hilly terrain. Kenwanda drains very well and is a good course
to play in rainy months. There are only two water hazards, and there is
bunkering behind many greens.
n
Legion Memorial Golf Course, 144 W. Marine View Drive, Everett
(425-259-4653), is a par-72. Everett’s original municipal course, it’s
beginning its third full season after a major reconstruction project.
The new Legion has many familiar holes from the original layout, but most
of the holes have been altered, some have been eliminated and others have
been added. The improvements have made Legion one of the better municipal
courses in the Puget Sound area, and additional enhancements are due in
the coming years.
n
Lobo Country Club, 12015 84th SE, Snohomish (360-568-1638), has
a par-27 course (nine holes). Lobo is a short, dry course and is a good
layout for seniors and players learning the game.
n
Lynnwood Municipal Golf Course, 20200 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood (425-672-4653),
has a par-65 rating. Located adjacent to Edmonds Community College, the
course is short and tight. Accuracy is a must on this tree-lined course,
which has excellent drainage and stays relatively dry during times of
heavy rain.
n
Monroe Golf Club, 22110 Old Owen Road, Monroe (360-794-8498), has
nine holes, rated at par-33. Being located along a ridge that sheds water
well makes it one of the driest courses in Snohomish County. The terrain
is generally flat. There are no water hazards.
n
Nile Country Club, 6601 244th St. SW, Mountlake Terrace (425-776-5154),
has a par-67 rating. Formerly a private course, the scenic venue now is
open to the public. Nile has many hills and tight fairways. It can be
seen from I-5 at the 244th interchange at the Snohomish-King County line.
n
Snohomish Public Golf Club, 7806 147th Ave. SE, Snohomish (360-568-2676
or 1-800-560-2676), has a par-72. This elegant course combines all the
elements for a fine round of golf, featuring long, tree-lined fairways.
There are several slopes, though some holes are flat, and most holes have
water and other hazards.
n
Walter E. Hall Memorial Golf Course, 1226 West Casino Road, Everett
(425-353-4653), is par-72. With mostly flat and spacious fairways that
are generally forgiving for the golfer with a wayward shot, this is a
comfortable municipal course that is proposed to undergo renovation in
the coming years.
n
Wellington Hills Golf Course, 7026 240th SE, Woodinville (425-485-5589),
has a par-34 rating for its nine holes. A longtime course near the very
southern edge of Snohomish County, Wellington Hills has a rolling terrain
and small greens. Only a handful of hazards — two bunkers and water on
one hole — come into play.
