selected
as New Media Center

Cascadia Community
College recently was recognized as a leader in its use of technology by
the New Media Consortium, a nonprofit organization that promotes enhanced
teaching through new media.
Earlier this year,
the NMC’s board of directors commissioned its fourth worldwide search
for proven leaders among higher-education institutions in the application
of technology to teaching, learning, research or creative expression.
Bothell-based Cascadia
was among 50 colleges and universities identified in the search as a New
Media Center, joining 125 other colleges, universities and museums to
have already received the designation, including MIT, Princeton, Yale,
Mount Holyoke, San Diego Community College and San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art.
“The selection process
was very competitive,” NMC President and CEO Larry Johnson said in a prepared
statement. “We received the largest number of applications in our history,
and the overall quality of those applications was just extraordinary.
Taken as a whole, the results show the state of technology integration
in colleges and universities is at a remarkably high level.”
In addition to the
designation itself, institutions selected as New Media Centers become
part of the NMC, working with colleagues across the world to help set
the agenda for technology in higher education.
“It is an honor to
be included amongst such a prestigious list of higher-education institutions,”
said Cascadia President Victoria Muñoz Richart. “We are the newest college
in Washington state in over 20 years. We are committed to making this
college a hallmark of the latest innovations in education and technology.”
Cascadia, which opened
in the fall of 2000 on a campus co-located with the University of Washington,
Bothell, offers students easy access to high-tech computer labs and a
media center complete with a multimedia studio. While attending the school,
students develop personalized electronic, Web-based portfolios to showcase
their skills.
