Around the County

“Around the County” is a sampling of short items about people in business, news events and commercial construction that Snohomish County Business Journal staff members encounter in their visits around Snohomish County. — John Wolcott, SCBJ Editor

Tulalip outlet center under way
The new 120-store Factory Outlet Center announced recently by the Tulalip Tribes is well under way at the north end of Quil Ceda Village, north of the Tulalip Casino. Graders, trenchers and dozers scattered across the huge site have already cleared brush, leveled the site, and begun burying utility lines and erecting the first pilings for building foundations. The shopping complex is due to open next spring.

Everett comprehensive plan
Watch for a new city of Everett Web site for information about how the City Council is shaping an update to the 1990 comprehensive plan for urban growth areas, which then goes to the Snohomish County Council to be woven into its countywide plan. Community Development Director Dave Koenig presented an overview of the city’s growth over the last decade to the Upside Downtown business owners group in May. The city’s population grew 31 percent between 1990 and 2000, from 70,000 to 91,488, he said, while the broader planning area for the city grew from 104,000 to 128,652 during the same period.

Dale Terwedo on mercy flight
Dale Terwedo, owner of Terwedo Financial Services LLC in Edmonds, also flies mercy missions for Angel Flight. His latest volunteer piloting effort with his Cessna P206 flew critically ill Kailee Wells, 7, to Vancouver, British Columbia. The adoptive parents of the Chinese child are seeking a bone marrow match from Asian residents in Vancouver, as they did in Seattle before that. Terwedo “loves flying and helping people,” he said. A KIRO-TV news team broadcast news of his flight in May.

New Everett Vision Team
A new Vision Team has been formed by Mayor Ray Stephanson to help assess Everett, its future and opportunities for growth planning. The team is headed by Reid Shockey of Shockey/Brent Inc., with 35 years of planning in Snohomish County and the region. Former Everett Mayor Pete Kinch is vice chairman.

Other community members volunteering for the team include Mary Jane Anderson, Zeb Cobbs, Erich Franz, Gwendolyn Gray, Larry Hanson, Charla Hattendorf, Peter Jackson, Gail Larson, Jo Levin, Katrina Lindahl, Scott Murphy, Christine Neal, Drew Nielsen, Norm Nunnally, Clair Olivers, Janet Prichard, Buzz Rodland, Pamela Selnes, Craig Skotdal, Capt. Dan Squires, City Council member Brenda Stonecipher, Robert Strickland, Morrie Trautman, Allyn Triezenberg, Norm Tubbs, Carlos Veliz, Ted Wenta, Rich White, Valerie Steel and Mark Wolken.

WMS a finalist for $100,000 prize
Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government has honored Mukilteo’s Washington Manufacturing Services, a nonprofit firm advising manufacturing companies on ways to improve their processes and profits, choosing it as one of 15 national finalists for the school’s $100,000 prize in its Innovations in American Government Awards. The winner will be announced July 28. John Vicklund, president of WMS, said the selection involved his company’s participation in the Manufacturing Extension Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Shurgard opens Shoreline center
Shurgard Storage Centers Inc. opened its newest area location in late May, a 43,000-square-foot facility at 20041 Ballinger Way NE in Shoreline, providing more than 400 units, Sales and Marketing Manager Jeffrey Lindstrom said. Mayors of Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and Lake Forest Park all took part in the opening ceremonies. Although located in Shoreline, the facility’s major market area includes south Snohomish County.

Local Master Builders group
the largest in U.S.

Although serving the 26th-largest housing market in the country, the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties is now the largest local home builders association in the United States, with membership standing at 3,615 companies, the organization said in May. The group, whose membership has more than doubled since 1994, is one of more than 800 local associations in the United States affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders, headquartered in Washington, D.C.
