Local Red Cross chapter taps Morrison for top post

SCBJ Staff

Chuck Morrison has been selected as the top executive for the Snohomish County chapter of the American Red Cross, an organization that has recently battled financial troubles.

Morrison, 50, will be paid $72,000 a year.

He previously worked at Everett Community College. During his two decades there, he managed its food services and bookstore before taking over as head of the college foundation.

Morrison was first appointed interim director of the Red Cross chapter in November, three months after an emergency fund drive was kicked off to save the chapter.

That drive raised $200,000, putting it on firmer financial footing. The local chapter, which has an annual operating budget of $1.15 million, ranks among the 100 largest local chapters in the nation.

Talks are now under way with the Island County and Anacortes/San Juan County chapters about a possible merger, said James Shipman, who heads the Snohomish County chapter’s board.

Any potential merger would likely be six months to a year away, he said.

The three local chapters would continue to have independent boards. Local donations would stay with the local chapters. But it would have one overall executive. The goal would be to preserve individual Red Cross chapters, but “improve our service delivery over a wider geographic area,” Shipman said.
