The Boeing Co., Costco Business Center of Lynnwood and Work Opportunities were among 32 businesses recognized during United Way of Snohomish County’s Community Caring Celebration held in late February to mark the success of the nonprofit organization’s 2002 campaign, which raised more than $10.2 million.

The total, which will increase as workplace campaigns conclude, is about $467,000 more than the 2001 campaign and $667,000 more than the 2002 goal, according to United Way officials.

More than 450 local businesses and organizations helped raise funds, including the Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound and Boeing, which pledged more than $4.6 million and received a special recognition award for its efforts.

Costco Business Center received the Best of Trade and President’s awards for its outstanding overall campaign effort, which raised $39,673. The total raised by employees was 40 percent more than last year and participation went up by 82 percent, according to United Way.

Work Opportunities received the Best of Trade and President’s awards in the not-for-profit division for its longstanding support of United Way, strong leadership and campaign success, raising $7,290, 40 percent more than last year.

The city of Everett and The Flying Pig Brewing Co. received Innovation awards for their use of unique fund-raising ideas.

“I’m just as excited as I can be,” said County Executive Bob Drewel, who co-chaired the campaign with Timothy Nowlis of Boeing.

“A lot of times, people believe that folks will not respond to those in need,” Drewel said. “Snohomish County proved again this is not the case. This is a wonderful place.”

Leaders for the 2003 campaign also were announced during the celebratory event Feb. 20. Charlie Earl, president of Everett Community College, and Lori Husa, vice president and northern Washington district manager for Wells Fargo Bank will be co-chairs for the upcoming fund raiser.
