Legislators to hold NASCAR hearing in Marysville

SCBJ Staff

A state legislative committee, chaired by Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, will convene a hearing on the proposed NASCAR racetrack north of Marysville in a two-hour session at Marysville-Pilchuck High School on Nov. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The bipartisan Economic Development and International Relations committee, which includes members of the state Senate and House of Representatives, wants to hear from recognized supporters and opponents of the racetrack proposal. Local legislators also are invited to the public meeting.

In late September, the International Speedway Corp. selected north Marysville as the preferred location for its newest NASCAR track. That decision was followed by an ISC proposal calling for the public to possibly fund $200 million of the $250 million project.

For the upcoming hearing, both those groups opposed to and supportive of the track have been invited to speak. The Tulalip Tribes also will be asked to make an environmental presentation as a sovereign government affected by the proposal.

To keep the meeting on schedule and orderly, Owen has asked that the public attending adhere to the protocol and decorum of the Senate by keeping all signs and demonstrations outside of the meeting place.
