Public relations
for nonprofits — Nov. 3
The Public Relations Society of America Puget Sound Chapter’s 14th annual
“Connecting for a Cause,” an all-day seminar on public relations for nonprofit
organizations, is back at Seattle Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 3.
Attendees will learn how to reach diverse audiences, understand how to
do effective PR evaluation and sit in on a panel discussion with media
professionals. Cost to attend is $35 for students, $60 for members and

Book publishing
conference — Nov. 4 and 5
Book Publishers Northwest and the Independent Book Publishers Association
will co-host the first Northwest Independent Book Publishing conference
at the Mayflower Hotel in Seattle on Nov. 4 and 5. The “Business of Books”
conference will focus on issues crucial to the bottom line. Panels and
presentations will draw experts from the association’s 12-member board.
Panel discussions will focus on overcoming the special challenges of publishing
children’s books, exploiting niche markets, choosing the right production
strategy, making book club and catalog sales, finding national distribution,
raising cash and having an exit plan. Cost to attend is $130 per person
or $80 for IBPA, PMA, BPNW and/or NWABP members. Registration forms are

seminar
for real estate agents — Nov. 8
Legacy Escrow Service Inc. is partnering with Susan Horowitz of Commonwealth
Title to bring international trainer and consultant Wes Taylor to Everett
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 8. The topic is “Developing and Protecting
Client Relationships — Increase Your Sales.” Real estate agents are invited
to attend the approved four-clock-hour course to be held at Mitzel’s American
Kitchen, 303 128th St. SW, in south Everett. Cost to attend the seminar

Soroptimist meetings
— Nov. 9, 23, 30
Soroptimist International of Everett will hold its next business meeting
from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 9 and its next program meeting from noon to 1
p.m. Nov. 23 at the Everett Golf & Country Club, 1500 52nd St. SE, in
Everett. The volunteer organization for business and professional women
works to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and
throughout the world. The organization is committed to serving local,
national and international communities, and participating actively in
decision-making at all levels of society. The Nov. 23 program meeting
will focus on the environment. Also, on Nov. 30, the group will meet at
11:00 a.m. at the local food bank to assist as needed. Cost for each luncheon

“Focus on Farming
Conference II” — Nov. 10
Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon will convene “Focus on Farming
Conference II: Growing Success for Snohomish County Agriculture,” at 8
a.m. Nov. 10 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe. The program
will include sessions on targeting niche markets, developing new products,
innovative marketing strategies and more. Presenters will include farm
entrepreneurs in a variety of areas, including dairy, nursery, forestry
and specialty foods. Conference doors will open at 7:15 a.m., with Reardon
scheduled to kick off the day with opening remarks at 8 a.m. There is
no charge for the conference, but pre-registration is required and participation

Management consultants
conference — Nov. 10
The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Institute of Management Consultants
will hold its annual conference, “Taking Your Business to the Next Level,”
from 7 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 10 at The Bellevue Club, 11200 SE Sixth St.,
in Bellevue. Conference speakers will include University of Washington
professor of MBA and executive MBA programs Suresh Kotha; U.S. Bancorp
economist John Mitchell; Kristi Marchbanks, president and chief executive
of Sea Tab Software; and Duane Knapp, president of BrandStategy Inc. The
conference, which includes a continental breakfast, costs $65 for IMC

Small-business
conference — Nov. 17
The Washington Policy Center will hold a statewide small-business conference
from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17 at the SeaTac Hilton. Attendees will
work with other small-business owners and policymakers to find solutions
to improve the state’s small-business climate. There also will be a lunch
keynote address with a question-and-answer session by Gov. Christine Gregoire.

Real estate “Forecast
Breakfast” — Dec. 1
The Western Washington Chapter of the Institute of Real Estate Management
will hold its 20th annual “Forecast Breakfast” on Dec. 1 at the Meydenbauer
Center in Bellevue. The meeting will feature industry experts speaking
on the coming year and what investors, brokers, managers and builders
can expect from the market. The keynote speaker will be Lynn Michaelis,

expo and gala — Dec. 7
The Northwest
Washington Women’s Business Center will hold its first-ever All That Glitters
Expo & Gala on Dec. 7 at the Edmonds Conference Center in Edmonds. The
event features a daylong marketplace bringing women-owned businesses and
consumers together to shop and network and an evening gala and fund-raiser

Defense and security
grants
conference — Dec. 8
The Washington Technology Center and Snohomish County Economic Development
Council will present a conference dedicated to helping entrepreneurs secure
defense and security grants from the federal government from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Museum of History & Industry in Seattle. The program
will focus on what federal agencies look for in defense and security technology
applications and how to successfully position a company to win one of
these funding awards. Register by Oct. 31 to receive the special “early
bird” rate of $75. Beginning Nov. 1, the cost to attend this conference
