BLR wins Coast Guard helicopter contract
Everett-based Boundary Layer Research Inc., or BLR, has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Coast Guard to adapt a NASA-patented technology for use on its fleet of HH-65 Dolphin helicopters.

The company will use its BLR Tailboom Strake Modification device to help expand yaw control safety margins and reduce pilot workload for the HH-65, BLR said in a news release.

CT donates 10 vehicles to area nonprofits
Community Transit recently donated eight surplus vans and two surplus minibuses to area nonprofit organizations through CT’s van grant program. Several of the vehicles went to groups that submitted joint applications.

Recipients are: Abbott-Wolfe Center for the Cascade Seniors; CASA Ministries and Baker Street Ministries; Catholic Community Services WW/NW; Compass Health; Edmonds Community College Foundation and Edmonds Community College; Marysville/North County Family YMCA; Quality Industrial Services and Mobile Crew Services; Pacific Treatment Alternatives; South County Senior Center, Olympic Baptist Church and Edmonds Open Bible Church; and the Sultan Boys and Girls Club, Vitality Christian Church and Volunteers of America/Sky Valley Family Support and Community Resource Center.

Port of Everett wins environmental award
The Port of Everett, which formed a wetland between I-5 and Union Slough south of Marysville out of what had been a 19-acre field, has been selected as a winner of the American Association of Port Authorities’ 2001 Environmental Improvement Awards Competition.

The project, completed earlier this year, recently was opened to the public. It can be accessed off Highway 529 between Everett and Marysville from the turnoff to Biringer Farms.

ICOS drug to get review
The Food and Drug Administration has agreed to review Cialis, a new treatment for erectile dysfunction being developed through a joint venture between Bothell-based ICOS Corp. and Eli Lilly and Co.

ICOS said its studies show men with mild to severe dysfunction may benefit from the oral drug.

ScenicSoft beefs up global network
Lynnwood-based ScenicSoft Inc. recently appointed seven new business partners, including two distributors in France and a dealer for Taiwan and China, according to a news release issued by the company.

These reseller agreements came about shortly after the appointment of new business partners in Italy (Pico S.r.l.), the UK/Ireland (Positive Focus), Romania (Dynon) and Croatia (PowerCom 2000).

The two new distributors for France, Maqprint and Evergraphic, will market the ScenicSoft range of publishing and graphic arts software and sell to and support their network of dealers.

Taiwan-based dealer Jackson Technologies will represent ScenicSoft in Taiwan and China.

ScenicSoft also announced last month that an OEM agreement has been signed with Fujifilm to re-sell and integrate ScenicSoft’s software programs — UpFront, Prep, Pandora and Color Central — into Fujifilm’s Valiano digital workflow program and other Fujifilm products.

‘Serious Money’ begins
season with new host

“Serious Money,” a weekly financial series produced by KCTS Television, began its 13th season last month with a new face: host Tom Cox, who takes over from Barry Mitzman.

Cox, formerly a business anchor at KREM-TV of Spokane and publisher of the Bellingham Business Journal, is the Business Development Director at Merriman Capital Management of Seattle.

Cox kicked off the season Sept. 21. Upcoming episodes, which air at 8 p.m. Fridays on KCTS Channel 9, will include interviews with Howard Schultz, owner of the Seattle SuperSonics and Chairman of Starbucks Coffee Co.; V. Lawrence Evans, President and CEO of Bellingham-based Horizon Financial; and Howard Lincoln, Chairman and CEO of the Seattle Mariners.

Reid Middleton opens
downtown Everett branch

Reid Middleton Inc. recently opened a branch office at 2906 Colby Ave. in downtown Everett, offering civil and structural design, surveying, site development, plan review and code compliance services.

“Reid Middleton has experienced significant growth,” said Paul Masten, Executive Vice President and Chairman of the board at Reid Middleton. “We have seen the number of clients and projects in downtown Everett and Snohomish County grow. Office-supply chain Staples Inc. has opened a new store at 3011 196th St. SW in the Gold Park Plaza Two in Lynnwood. On Oct. 13, Staples will hold a grand-opening celebration, offering customers a selection of items at prices “well below Staples’ typical discounts,” according to the company.
