Lynnwood projects multiply
At a recent Lynnwood Business Advisory Group meeting, members learned that:

  • The Alderwood Mall expansion will be completed by November, with the Loews Theater due to open in February.
  • The city’s Convention Center construction is on schedule for an April opening.
  • Lexus of Seattle is tripling its size with a new dealership in Lynnwood on Highway 99, due to open in March.
  • A draft implementation plan for the City Center project is due to the City Council in October.
  • A new luxury auto dealership proposed for Lynnwood is studying purchase of a site at the southeast corner of Alderwood Mall Parkway and Poplar Way near I-5.

House of Bread opens
Mill Creek Town Center offers visitors another attraction with the House of Bread, which opened in late September at 15224 Main Street, Suite 105. The bread shop and cafe joins a growing list of House of Bread franchises nationwide, with almost a dozen up and running and 17 in development, according to California-based House of Bread Franchising Inc. The Mill Creek shop, operated by House of Bread Washington LLC, offers customers a variety of homemade specialty breads as well as muffins, scones, quick breads and cinnamon rolls, said franchisee Wayne Warren. Sandwiches and a daily soup also are on the menu for lunch. Following its “soft” September opening, the shop will celebrate an official “grand opening” before Thanksgiving, Warren said.

Warbirds flying
Paul Allen’s Arlington Airport-based Flying Heritage Collection includes flyable vintage aircraft that need to be exercised a few times each year. The next “flying day” for the planes is set for Oct. 23 at the airfield. A P-40 Warhawk and a World War I Jenny are due to fly from noon to 1:45 p.m., followed by an I-16 and a P-51 Mustang from 4 to 6 p.m. Best views are usually from the east side of the airport at the entrance to the facility. Flights will depend on weather. For up-do-date information, check the air museum’s Web site, www.flyingheritage.com.

Junior Achievement active
Snohomish County’s Junior Achievement board of directors recently launched their annual operating gift campaign to fund an active program that continues to grow. Last year, JA volunteers throughout Washington state conducted classroom programs on understanding America’s economic system that reached 100,426 students, surpassing 100,000 for the first time. In October the group’s Dare to Dream dinner and auction will be held in the new Boeing Center for Free Enterprise in Auburn, a new learning center for students that is similar to one planned soon for the north Seattle and Snohomish County area. Also this month, JA will induct four new business leaders into the Puget Sound Business Hall of Fame — John Ellis, Edward Fritsky, William Grose and Tony Callison.

Stillaguamish Casino hiring
Hiring has begun for more than 200 dealers, supervisors, cashiers, food and beverage service workers, a marketing coordinator, accountant, security officers and others for the Stillaguamish Tribe’s new Angel of the Winds Casino north of Arlington. Due to open in October, the casino will include 425 “slot” machines and 10 to 12 gaming tables.

New destroyer arriving
Welcoming ceremonies are set for Oct. 15 for Naval Station Everett’s newest vessel, the USS Momsen, the Navy’s newest Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, named for the late Vice Admiral Charles B. Momsen. The 511-foot, 2,600-ton ship, skippered by Cmdr. Edward F. Kenyon, is designed for multiple defensive and offensive missions with a crew of 330 sailors that includes Admiral Momsen’s great-grandson.
