Research grant
workshop — Oct. 7
The Washington Technology Center is hosting a regional conference, “Position
Your Project to Win National Institutes of Health Awards,” Oct. 7 in Seattle
to help technology companies and researchers learn more about federal
grant programs offered by the NIH. The conference will run from 8 a.m.
to 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Seattle and include tips for preparing successful
grant proposals and firsthand success stories from companies that have
successfully used NIH funding to advance their research and development.
The luncheon will feature keynote speaker Dr. Kenneth Stuart from the
Seattle Biomedical Research Institute. Advance registration is required.

Small-farm workshop
— Oct. 9
The Snohomish Conservation District is hosting a small-farm workshop from
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Stillaguamish Grange in Stanwood. Attendees
will learn about the benefits of producing grass-fed beef. The program
will feature Jo Robinson, author of “Pasture Perfect” and “Why Grass-fed
is Best.” Cost for the event, which includes lunch, is $10. For more information,

Estate planning
seminar — Oct. 20
A free, no-obligation seminar on the basics of estate planning will be
presented from 6 to 8 p.m., Oct. 20 at United Way of Snohomish County,

such subjects as how to prepare for making a will, the advantages of living

Expo,
annual chamber luncheon — Oct. 20
The Everett Area Chamber of Commerce is holding its Business Expo, an
annual business-to-business trade show, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20
at the Everett Events Center Conference Center, 2000 Hewitt Ave., in Everett.
Along with businesses showcasing their products and services, the trade
show will feature a new Expo Seminar Series designed for business enrichment
on topics ranging from technology to marketing and sales. The Everett
chamber will bring additional attendees to the venue during the day with
its annual meeting luncheon. The event, which will run from noon to 1:30
p.m., with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m., will feature keynote
speaker Steve Banta, Verizon’s regional president for the Northwest and
Southwest. Cost for the luncheon is $35 for chamber members registered
by Oct. 18 and $45 for nonmembers or those who register at the door. For

annual dinner — Oct. 20
The South Snohomish County Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual “Tribute
to Leadership” dinner from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Mill Creek
Country Club, 15500 Country Club Drive, Mill Creek. During the gala event,
the John M. Fluke Sr. Community Service Award will be presented. Cost
to attend the event is $45 for chamber members who pre-register and $50

WDC Business Symposium
— Oct. 28
Expected shortages in various local work occupations over the next few
years will be examined at a special Snohomish County Workforce Development
Council Business Symposium set for Oct. 28. Held from 7:30 a.m. to noon
at the Lynnwood Embassy Suites, the program will examine the survey results
of a $200,000 study of eight major industries in the county by a national
research firm. The WDC is part of the Snohomish County Blueprint 2010
group formed by county Executive Aaron Reardon that recently identified
major industry groups that have proven to be employment and economic growth
engines, said William Bell, marketing director for the council. Reardon
will lead the symposium discussion of the study. A panel of industry representatives
also is expected to offer its views. The Snohomish County Business Journal
is an official sponsor of the event. Mailed notices of the program will
be sent out in early October.

trade show — Oct. 30
A free North Snohomish County tri-chamber Business Expo is set for Oct.
30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Hawthorn Inn & Suites at Smokey Point
in Arlington, co-sponsored by Business Computer Services and G.E. Financial.
