Women’s Health
and Wealth Conference — Oct. 1

More than 450 business and professional women are expected to attend the first ever Women’s Health and Wealth Conference on Oct. 1 at the Everett Events Center. The all-day conference will feature three keynote speakers and breakout sessions on health- and wealth-related topics. Because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Swedish Comprehensive Breast Center will be onsite to give mammograms. Keynote presentations include: “Grow Your Business by Maximizing Your Network” — Marcia Brixey, Money Wi$e Women Founder; “Surviving Sudden Cardiac Arrest” — Tracey Conway, Emmy Award-winning actress; and “Embracing the Emotional Challenge of Earning More” — Mikelann Valterra, author, financial counseling professional and motivational speaker. Career and college fair — Oct. 5
The “What About Tomorrow? Career and College Fair,” hosted by Everett Public Schools and WorkSource Snohomish County, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Everett Events Center. More than 50 colleges and representatives from the top 10 Snohomish County employment sectors will be present to answer questions and share information. Resume and interview consultations and breakout sessions also will be available. The career fair is free to all ages and will give attendees the opportunity to explore jobs and schools that can start them on a career path. Affordable-housing
candidates forum — Oct. 6

Affordable housing will be the focus of an upcoming candidates forum, sponsored by KeyBank, and held from 7:15 to 9 a.m. Oct. 6 at Everett Station. Candidates for city and county leadership are expected to attend to take part in a discussion on affordable-housing ideas and solutions for Snohomish County. The forum will be moderated by Karen Miller, chair of the Washington state Housing Finance Committee. Cost for the breakfast event is $10. ‘Doing Business with China’
seminar — Oct. 11

A one-day seminar, “Doing Business with China,” will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Edmonds Conference Center, 201 Fourth Ave. N., in Edmonds. Speakers will include Shanghai attorney David Z. Mao, a senior legal consultant with Davis, Wright, Tremaine LLP, and former Gov. Gary Locke. They will provide information appropriate for businesses of all types interested in exploring markets in China. The cost of $139 includes lunch. Edmonds Community College’s ArtsNow offers classes to take artists from creation to commerce at the Edmonds Conference Center, 201 Fourth Ave. N., in Edmonds. Courses include:

  • “Selling Your Craft,” turning an artistic hobby into a viable business, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Thursdays, Nov. 3 and 10, $65.
  • “Run Your Business by the Numbers,” accounting basics for the artist, 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 11, $55.
  • “Washington Lawyers for the Arts, Tax Workshop for Artists,” keeping business and tax records organized and minimizing the chance of an audit, 7 to 9 p.m., Oct. 25, $35.
  • “Copyright Law for Artists and Graphic Designers,” learning how to follow the law and protecting the artist’s work, 7 to 9 p.m., Nov. 11, $35.

Soroptimist meetings — Oct. 12, 26
Soroptimist International of Everett will hold its next business meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 12 and its next program meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Everett Golf & Country Club, 1500 52nd St. SE, in Everett. The volunteer organization for business and professional women works to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. The organization is committed to serving local, national and international communities, and participating actively in decision-making at all levels of society. The upcoming program meeting Oct. 26 will focus on international goodwill and understanding. Cost for each luncheon event is $10. Employment law presentation — Oct. 13
The Everett Area Chamber of Commerce and the Snohomish County Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management will hold a presentation on employment law from 7:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 13 at the Quality Inn & Conference Center in south Everett. The breakfast presentation, “Avoiding Legal Traps,” will feature Vickie Norris and other members of the Anderson Hunter Law Firm discussing key changes in COBRA, leave laws and record-keeping requirements, sexual harassment, background/reference checking and age discrimination. The program is approved for one CEU credit toward PHR/SHPR re-certification. Cost is $55 for SHRM members and $65 for nonmembers. Information-technology lectures
— Oct. 15 and 29, Dec. 11

Free information-technology lectures will be held at Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W., in Lynnwood, for businesses and individuals seeking to protect their private information. The lectures, taught by instructor Steve Hailey, also will benefit anyone working in the information-security industry or considering a career in the field. Lectures include:

  • “Information Security — An Overview,” 9 a.m. to noon, Oct. 15, Snohomish Hall, Room 110. Attendees will learn what is needed to establish and maintain information security for businesses of all sizes. It includes examples of common attacks against information security.
  • “Forensic Analysis of the Windows Registry,” 9 to 10:30 a.m., Oct. 29, Snohomish Hall, Room 110. Attendees will learn how areas of the Windows registry can be examined to figure out what a user was up to on a computer system.
  • “Identity Theft — What You Need to Know,” 2 to 4 p.m., Dec. 11, Triton Union Building 202. Attendees will learn how to evaluate their own privacy risks and greatly reduce their chances of becoming a victim of identity theft as well as how to successfully restore their identity if it is stolen.

Work-force leadership conference
— Oct. 24 through 26

The Washington state Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board, in collaboration with the Washington Economic Development Association and the state’s Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development, is holding an annual leadership conference from Oct. 24 through 26 in Spokane. Two pre-conference workshops being held Oct. 24 will look at economic development’s interaction with work-force development and the interaction between K-12 education and the world of work. More than 500 attendees from business, government, labor, education, community and technical colleges and private career schools, work-force programs and legislators are expected to attend.
