Biomedical company buys Fluke land

Snohomish County’s expanding biotech and biomedical industries are making news again, first Berlex Laboratories and now SNBL USA.

Less than two months ago Berlex Laboratories, the American offshoot of Germany’s Schering AG, announced it would build a $60 million biotech drug manufacturing facility in Opus Northwest’s Northpointe Corporate Center north of Lynnwood.

Opening with 70 highly skilled biotech jobs, the firm is expected to generate an estimated $85 million a year in tax revenue for local and state governments. If the firm’s Seattle and Bothell employees eventually move to the Lynnwood site, it would increase employment to more than 180.

In late August, Japan’s Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories Ltd. — SNBL USA — in Everett announced it has purchased 29 acres of land from nearby Fluke Manufacturing Co. for $3.5 million to expand its present facilities. Opened four years ago with 25 employees, it currently employs nearly 250. Another 250 jobs could be added by next year, with further growth eventually increasing its work force to 1,000 during the next several years.

SNBL USA spokesman John Wilson said the company, which conducts research for pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, has had “tremendous success since opening in Everett.”

Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson said he believes “we will see future job growth coming mainly from businesses that already operate in Everett and decide to expand here.”
