EDUCATION
Barbara Haas, a developmental education instructor at Edmonds Community College, has been honored with the college’s Excellence in Education award. She has been head of the college’s high-school completion program for 10 years and helped to develop the school’s Edmonds Career Access Program that gives students 16-21 opportunities to earn their high school diplomas and begin career training programs at the college.

ENGINEERING
Landau Associates, a leading Pacific Northwest engineering and environmental consulting firm in Edmonds, has promoted several employees, including Jerry R. Ninteman to principal, Michelle L. Ramos to senior geotechnical engineer, Dana L. Olcott to senior staff engineer, Mario Lopez-Ramos to staff engineer, Erik R. Gerking to senior staff geologist, Evalyn A. Albright to senior staff scientist and April C. Wallace to staff scientist.

FINANCIAL
Laura Scott of Snohomish recently received Edward Jones’ Managing Partner’s award for her outstanding sales and service work over the past year. She was one of only 642 investment representatives out of 9,000 to receive the award.

Wendy J. Scofield has joined Hascal, Sjoholm & Co. in Everett as a staff accountant. A graduate of Cascade High School in Everett, she is completing her bachelor of science degree in accounting at the Lynnwood campus of Central Washington University. Also, Donald R. Carek of Monroe, with Hascal, Sjoholm & Co. since 2003 as a technology engineer and consultant, has been promoted to Information Technology Services Manager.

David Ellis has joined Peoples Bank of Lynnwood as assistant vice president and SBA loan manager. The bank recently achieved Preferred Lender status with the U.S. Small Business Administration. That recognition is the highest level of certification a lender can receive from the SBA., decreasing the bank’s turnaround time on an SBA loan application.

HEALTH CARE
Dr. David Levy, a urologist with The Everett Clinic, recently was elected to the Society of Urologic Oncology, a group of urologic oncologists, all of whom have made substantial contributions to the advancement of urologic cancer care across the nation.

New staff additions to the Providence Physician Group include Carolyn Sherman, M.D., at Harbour Pointe, specializing in internal medicine and pediatrics; Chere McCormick, D.O., at Claremont, specializing in osteopathic medicine, and Carl Janzen, M.D., in Snohomish, a family physician who previously worked for the Mayo Clinic, with special interests in development pediatrics and sports medicine. Also, Judy Roudebush, RN, is the new Clinical Director for Family Services at the Women’s and Children’s Pavilion on Providence Everett Medical Center’s Pacific campus.

Integrated Rehabilitation Group of Everett has added Julie Mahler, M.S., R.D., to its Mukilteo office staff to provide nutrition counseling to clients who want to optimize sports performance, those who are diabetic, and those using good nutrition for weight-loss or improved well-being.

NONPROFITS
Maddy Metzger-Utt has been hired as the new executive director of the Greater Everett Community Foundation. She formerly was the executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County. She has worked for the Snohomish County YMCA in a variety of roles over the past 12 years and is a graduate of Stanford University.

Amy Spain, who has worked at the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau for almost nine years, is now in charge of efforts to boost the county’s visitor industry. The tourism bureau’s board of directors recently chose Spain, who becomes only the second director in the nonprofit agency’s history. Spain, who previously was the bureau’s group sales executive, succeeds Sandy Ward, who left in April to become marketing director for Everett’s Future of Flight Center and Boeing Tour facility.

Bob Nelson has joined the staff of the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross as health and safety services director. The Arlington resident oversees all local Red Cross health and safety training programs and services, marketing of Red Cross safety and preparedness products, and health and safety community outreach planning. Prior to joining Red Cross, Nelson was an account manager with Qwest Communications in Seattle.

The Arts Council of Snohomish County has newly appointed board members who will serve a three-year term: Craig French, Mill Creek, project manager, the Boeing Co.; Angie Johnson, Lake Stevens, special event coordinator, Boeing; Carol Rodland, Everett, community advocate; and Morrie Trautman, Everett, owner, Yukon Trading. The council also has elected officers of the board: Ken Rowe, president; Jerry Raphael, first vice president; J. Leach, second vice president; Janet Hamilton, secretary; and Albert Chang as treasurer.

REAL ESTATE
Melissa Helland has joined Windermere Real Estate’s Mukilteo office as a sales associate, and Ann Doughty has joined Windermere’s Mill Creek office as a sales associate. Helland previously was a sales associate with RE/Max Metro Properties in Mukilteo. She also has previous experience in title and escrow. Doughty has a background in sales and customer service and is also a past volunteer probation/parole officer. Also, Barbara Clark has joined Windermere Real Estate’s Lynnwood office as a sales associate, after managing the Dawson-Clark Chiropractic Clinic in Everett since 1987.

Bill Bieber has been promoted to senior director of construction for Opus Northwest LLC. In his new role, Bieber will manage all sales efforts, design and construction, contract negotiations and overall daily operations of the construction division for the Washington state region. Bieber has more than 23 years of experience in the construction industry.

Layne Sapp, founder and CEO of MILA Inc., an e-commerce home mortgage provider based in Mountlake Terrace, has been named the regional winner of Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year 2005 award competition in the service category. Sapp and six other regional winners are eligible for selection as national Entrepreneur of the Year, a first-of-a-kind program, according to Ernst & Young, designed to recognize outstanding entrepreneurs. Also, MILA has promoted former Executive Vice President and National Sales Director Mark Hikel to president of the company. Since he joined the business in 2000, the company’s lending volume has increased from $234 million to a projected $5.5 billion in 2005, while the sales staff grew from 36 to nearly 300.

RETAIL
Lynnwood-based Compendium Inc., a manufacturer of gift products, has hired Michael Flynn as vice president of corporate sales and Jennifer Ellison as national retail sales manager. Flynn has spent the bulk of his career in sales, marketing and communications, most recently as a vice president for U.S. Bank in commercial banking. Ellison, a marketing and communications professional for 15 years, spent seven years as an account supervisor at Publicis in Seattle.

Dan Hoff has joined the Owens Corning Basement Finishing System of Washington as its new manager of marketing and sales in Woodinville, serving Snohomish and King counties with installation of mold and mildew resistant basement finishing systems for creating clean and safe living areas in homes.
