Introduction
These printing specifications
apply to all The Daily Herald Co.'s print publications: The Herald, the
Enterprise weekly newspapers (with zoned editions for Lynnwood, Edmonds,
Mountlake Terrace, Lake Forest Park, Mill Creek and Shoreline), Pickle
Press, Everett Navy Dispatch, TV Week and the monthly Snohomish County
Business Journal.
Display
Advertising supplied in camera-ready (paper or reflective material), film
negative or digital format will be accepted for publication as long as
the material meets the following criteria. These guidelines are designed
to ensure that your advertising will be published accurately and with
optimal reproduction quality.
All products
are printed on a high-speed offset web press on standard newsprint. Ad-Litho
CMYK process color inks are used exclusively. The Herald's Prepress environment
is entirely Macintosh based.

Line
Screens, angles, halftones and film specifications
Camera-Ready:
85 line screen
Film Negative: 100 line screen
Digital files will be imaged at 85 or 100 line screen
Film Negatives: Right Reading, Emulsion Down, 4.1 density
Press Dot Gain: 36%
Scanning Resolution: B&W Line Drawing or bit map: 600 dpi; B&W
or color photos/graphics: minimum 180 dpi
Camera-ready halftone highlights should be 9 to 11%; maximum shadow
84-86%
Film or digital halftone highlights should be 1 to 3%, maximum
shadow 88-90%.
Printing Ink Setup: SWOP Newsprint with 36% dot gain

Color
and trapping
All colors must
be provided in CMYK Process format. Pantone colors and Spot colors must
be converted to CMYK. Ask your sales representative for a color and tint
color sample chart.
Screen Angles: Cyan 15 degrees; Magenta 75 degrees; Yellow 0 degrees;
Black 45 degrees.
Overprint all black type that is less than 18 point size.
Reverse type from a color background must be 10 points or larger,
and should only be reversed out of areas with at least 70% tone value
in black, magenta or cyan (or combination of those inks).
Trapping or choking art elements: minimum .5 point. Set type larger
than 18 point with a minimum .5 point choke or spread
Maximum Ink Coverage: 240% Two secondary colors should not exceed
75% each. Any single color not intended to print solid should not exceed
80%. When building colors using CMYK process inks, refer to the sample
color and tint chart, available from your sales representative.
