Tips sign Ryan Chynoweth

Posted at 10:11 am by Nick Patterson

The Tips have signed their first pick from this year's bantam draft, Ryan Chynoweth, to a WHL education contract.

Chynoweth, a 15-year-old center, was taken in the second round, 24th overall this spring. He impressed during rookie scrimmages with his all-around game, and he was the only 15-year-old who was held over this week. Given his father is Kootenay general manager Jeff Chynoweth, it was never a threat that he wouldn't be committed to the WHL.

By signing his contract Chynoweth is eligible to play in this weekend's exhibition games during the Holiday Inn Preseason Classic at Comcast Arena. ...

Preseason tournament on deck

Posted at 4:56 pm by Nick Patterson

A wave of preseason junior hockey action is about to crash into Everett. The Holiday Inn Preseason Classic begins in two days, with nine games taking place over three days at Comcast Arena. This year's special guest is the OHL's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, giving local fans the rare opportunity to get a taste of a different league. Here's a reminder of this weekend's schedule:

Friday
Seattle vs. Portland, 11:30 a.m.
Spokane vs. Tri-City, 3 p.m.
Sault Ste. Marie vs. Everett, 7 p.m.

Saturday
Spokane vs. Seattle, 11:30 a.m.
Portland vs. Sault Ste. Marie, 3 p.m.
Tri-City vs. Everett, 7 p.m.

Sunday
Portland vs. Spokane, 11:30 a.m.
Tri-City vs. Sault Ste. Marie, 3 p.m.
Seattle vs. Everett, 7 p.m.

One bit of Tips news. Left wing Josh Winquist has rejoined practices, though on a limited basis. Winquist didn't participate in last week's training camp while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. He's skating in practices but not participating in drills that involve contact. He's expected to be cleared for contact in approximately two weeks, and he's hopeful to be ready for Everett's final two preseason games on Sept. 17 and 18. Winquist was the only returning player who was unable to participate last week because of injury. ...

Seven Tips headed to NHL camps

Posted at 4:16 pm by Nick Patterson

A total of seven Everett players on the current roster will be attending NHL training camps. Those seven are:

Forward Landon Ferraro (Detroit)
Forward Josh Birkholz (Florida)
Forward Kellan Tochkin (Vancouver)
Defenseman Alex Theriau (Dallas)
Defenseman Rasmus Rissanen (Carolina)
Goaltender Kent Simpson (Chicago)
Goaltender Thomas Heemskerk (San Jose)

All seven of those players are either draft picks or have already signed contracts. Heemskerk is the only one who might not come back as he's an overager and thus eligible to play professionally in the minors. The other six would need to make their NHL teams to play in the pros, and none are considered candidates to crack the NHL this season.

The good news, both for the coaching staff and the fans, is that none of them leave until next week. That means they'll all be on display during this weekend's preseason tournament games. That's a contrast to years past, when some players departed either prior or during the tournament. ...

Grey 4, Green 3 (SO), plus the roster moving forward

Posted at 5:12 pm by Nick Patterson

First, here's the box score from the Green vs. Grey game:

Grey 4, Green 3 (SO)
Grey 1 1 1--4
Green 1 1 1--3
Grey won shootout 2-1
First Period--1, Grey, Birkholz 1 (Giebel, Henry), 3:31 (pp). 2, Green, Cumiskey 1 (MacDonald, McCrea), 15:32. Penalties--Chynoweth, Green (boarding), 2:59; Elynuiuk, Grey (kneeing), 18:47.
Second Period--3, Grey, McDonald 1 (Bauml, Erricson), 1:53. 4, Green, Regier 1 (MacDonald, Maxwell), 11:53. Penalties--Morden, Grey (interference), 8:35; Bruckyere, Green (tripping), 19:35.
Third Period--5, Green, McCrea 1 (Rissanen), 6:21 (pp). 6, Grey, McCalpin 1 (Huhtala), 16:46. Penalties--Birkholz, Grey (hooking), 5:52; Morden, Grey (interference), 18:00.
Shootout--Grey 2 (Boehm NG, Bauml NG, Maguire G, Erricson G), Green 1 (Boyd G, McNicholas NG, Friesen NG, Chynoweth NG).
Shots on goal--Grey 16-7-16--39. Green 10-12-8--30. Power-play opportunities--Grey 1 of 4. Green 1 of 2.
Goalies--Grey, Rounds (10 shots, 9 saves), Lotz (12 shots, 11 saves), Turpin 1-0 (8 shots, 7 saves). Green, Siemens (23 shots, 21 saves), Desautels 0-1 (16 shots, 15 saves).

It was a competitive game throughout, with the margin never being more than one goal. Grey's Brendan McCalpin scored with 3:14 remaining in regulation to tie it at 3-3, and Grey then killed off a penalty the final two minutes to get the game to a shootout. The shootout then had a touch of controversy as Green's fourth shooter, Ryan Chynoweth, put the puck into the net on a nifty spin-o-rama move. However, the goal was disallowed because Chynoweth came to a full stop, and Jari Erricson converted for Grey on the following attempt to end the game.

What struck me most about this game is how well the prospects from rookie camp held up when put into a game situation with the vets. Normally in those situations one can easily tell the vets from the rookies. Perhaps it was because my perspective was altered by watching from the end zone, but I didn't notice a dramatic difference in play between vets and rookies today.

Troy Turpin ended up being the winning goalie. I imagine that was a thrill for the 16-year-old Renton resident.

Following the game the Tips reassigned 16 players. Those 16, along with their ages, were forwards Michael Bell (15), Brett Boehm (16), Lyrik Friesen (16), Mitchell Loose (17), Geordie Maguire (15), Brendan McCalpin (18), Ryan McDonald (16), Kyle Messervey (15), Michael McNicholas (16); defensemen Chandler Bruyckere (15), Noah Henry (16), Dale Nerland (16), Andrew Weich (15); and goaltenders Austin Lotz (15), Alec Rounds (16) and Troy Turpin (16).

That leaves the Tips with 31 players heading into the preseason schedule -- 18 forwards, nine defensemen and four goaltenders. Those players are forwards Kohl Bauml (16), Josh Birkholz (19), Jordyn Boyd (16), Ryan Chynoweth (15), Clayton Cumiskey (20), Campbell Elynuik (18), Jari Erricson (16), Landon Ferraro (19), Cody Fowlie (18), Tyler Giebel (17), Manraj Hayer (17), Jesse Huhtala (17), Scott MacDonald (19), Tyler Maxwell (19), Markus McCrea (18), D.Jay McGrath (18), Kellan Tochkin (19), Josh Winquist (17); defensemen: Darian Henry (16), Gabe Minville (18), Evan Morden (17), Ryan Murray (17), Jeff Regier (19), Rasmus Rissanen (19), Paul Sohor (19), Alex Theriau (18), Nicholas Walters (16); and goaltenders: Andy Desautels (16), Thomas Heemskerk (20), Luke Siemens (18), Kent Simpson (18).

There were no real surprises among the reassigned players. To me the biggest surprise, and it was a pleasant one, was that Kohl Bauml was retained for the time being. Bauml, little guy with skill, had a good rookie camp, then I thought he showed very well against the vets in today's game. His size and youth probably mean he won't make the team this season, but it was good to see him recognized. Chynoweth was the lone 15-year-old invited to stick around for a bit. He cannot make Everett's roster this season as he's too young. ...

FINAL ROOKIE CAMP STANDINGS

Blue 5-1
Red 2-2-2
Green 2-3-1
Grey 1-4-1

ROOKIE CAMP LEADING SCORERS

Geordie Maguire 6-5-11
Ryan Chynoweth 6-4-10
Michael Fretz 7-1-8
Kohl Bauml 6-1-7
Brett Boehm 5-2-7
Michael Bell 3-4-7
Bradley King 2-5-7
Kyle Messervey 4-2-6
Jari Erricson 3-3-6 (just two games)
Lyrik Friesen 3-3-6
Carson Stadnyk 3-3-6
Anthony Conti 2-4-6

DAY 3 NOTES

- There were more bodies at today's morning veteran practice as three players who've participated in rookie scrimmages skated with the vets. Those three were 16-year-old forwards Jari Erricson, Jordyn Boyd and Michael McNicholas. Both Erricson and Boyd spent one previous day with the vets. For the Californian McNicholas I believe it was his first time ever spending time with the varsity in any capacity

- Tips general manager Doug Soetaert has some incredibly difficult decisions to make with his forwards this season. With the addition of the 16-year-olds there were 18 forwards practicing this morning. None of those 18 looked out of place. Even older, less-heralded rookies, like Mitchell Loose and Brendan McCalpin, look capable of stepping in this season.

- Things got a little heated during the rookie games today, with plenty of hitting and a number of fights breaking out. Two of Everett's picks from this year's bantam draft, seventh rounder Michael Bell and ninth rounder Kyle Messervey, were right in the middle of things. Bell and Messervey are both intriguing late-round picks. They both have size, they're both willing to mix it up physically, they both seem to be irritants, and they both showed the ability to chip in offensively. If these two continue to develop they could make life very difficult for Everett's opponents in the future.

- It was an excellent final two days for another of Everett's 2010 draft picks, Geordie Maguire. Everett's fifth-rounder finished as the camp's leading scorer, and I think he got just about all of those points in his final four games. Maguire's another forward with good size. Add top pick Ryan Chynoweth, who showed an excellent all-around game and finished second in scoring, into the mix and it seems the Tips did pretty well for themselves in the past draft forward-wise.

- Great effort by local product Michael Fretz. The 16-year-old from Maltby finished as the rookie camp's leading goal scorer with seven in six games. ...

ROOKIE CAMP SCORING SUMMARIES

Blue 10 (Maguire 3, Fretz 3, Bauml 2, McDonald, King), Grey 6 (Boehm 2, Stadnyk, Blaquiere, Smith, Weich)
Red 6 (Friesen 2, Oliver 2, Kshyk, Robinson), Green 6 (Butcher 2, McNicholas 2, Erricson, Vincent)
Green 8 (Erricson 2, Hildebrand 2, Rockwood, Harden, McNicholas, Messervey)
Blue 5 (King, Bauml, Fretz, Maguire, E. Cox), Red 0

DAY 2 NOTES

- There was one switch between the veteran and rookie groups today. Sixteen-year-old forward Jordyn Boyd joined the veterans this morning, while fellow 16-year-old forward Jari Erricson took Boyd's place with the rookies. Both players are already signed, so I suspect this move was planned in advance.

- For the second straight day newcomers Landon Ferraro and Josh Birkholz skated together during the morning veteran practice. It seems the Tips like the way their speed complements one another. Former Kid Line compatriots Kellan Tochkin and Tyler Maxwell, who didn't skate together Thursday, were back together Friday, and along with Manraj Hayer they showed some of the old magic.

- Among the rookies there were two pairs of forwards who stood out today. Erricson was slotted onto a line alongside 16-year-old list player Michael McNicholas, and those two put up a ton of points in their two games. Fifteen-year-old Geordie Maguire had a big day, and he and diminutive 16-year-old Kohl Bauml worked well in tandem. We also had our first two players stand out for their physical play as 15-year-old invitees JJ Huerena and Nathan Wisniewski both dished out multiple big hits, and 15-year-old goalie invitee Jesse Jenks also looked solid. ...

DAY 1 NOTES

- Former Everett defenseman Jeff Regier is in camp on a tryout. Regier, Everett's second-round pick in the 2006 bantam draft, was traded to Prince George in October of 2008 in exchange for Dale Hunt. Regier left the Cougars during last preseason and ended up playing for the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL.

- Left wing Josh Winquist is not participating in camp. Winquist is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. He's about two weeks away from being cleared for physical contact.

- Four draft picks from the past two bantam drafts are not in camp. The biggest name is defenseman seth Jones, a 2009 first rounder who committed to the U.S. National Team Development Program over the summer. Also not here are 2009 eighth rounder Josh Racek, 2009 10th rounder Rhys Gilbert, and 2010 10th rounder Cody DePourcq.

- The veteran forwards showed some good speed during the morning practice.

- Among the standouts during the rookie scrimmages were forwards Ryan Chynoweth (showed a good all-around game), Michael Bell (size, feistiness and chipped in offensively) and Brett Boehm (flashed some smooth stickhandling skills). ...

Training camp less than 24 hours away

Posted at 11:29 am by Nick Patterson

That's right, one day remains before the Everett Silvertips take the ice for the first time in preparation for the 2010-11 WHL season. Training camp opens tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. at Lynnwood Ice Center. Camp is open free to the public, and here's a reminder of the schedule:

Thursday
9 a.m. - Silvertips practice
10:45 a.m. - Red vs. Blue
12:15 p.m. - Grey vs. Green
2 p.m. - Silvertips dryland workouts
3:30 p.m. - Red vs. Grey
5 p.m. - Blue vs. Green
Friday
9 a.m. - Silvertips practice
10:45 a.m. - Grey vs. Blue
12:15 p.m. - Red vs. Green
2 p.m. - Silvertips dryland workouts
3:30 p.m. - Grey vs. Green
5 p.m. - Red vs. Blue
Saturday
9 a.m. - Silvertips practice
10:45 a.m. - Blue vs. Green
12:15 p.m. - Red vs. Grey
2 p.m. - Silvertips dryland workouts
3:30 p.m. - Green vs. Red
5 p.m. - Grey vs. Blue
Sunday
12:30 p.m. - Green vs. Grey game

The camp format is a little different this year. Instead of having all the players broken into teams for daily scrimmages, the veterans step straight into intense practices, while four teams of rookies compete in two scrimmages each day for evaluation purposes. Coach Craig Hartsburg decided he wanted to begin hands-on work with the potential roster players immediately this year. Last year he didn't know the players, so it was useful to get a look at them in the scrimmage setting. Now he knows his players and can get to work right away.

A number of new faces will be donning Silvertip jerseys for the first time. That group includes trade acquisition Landon Ferraro, former Minnesota Golden Gopher Josh Birkholz, and import draftee Jesse Huhtala.

I will again be live blogging from the first three days of training camp, so those who want to follow the action can tune in tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. And for those who can't tune in and don't want to wade through the play-by-play, I'll be posting a separate wrap-up post at the end of each day.

Sunday's Green vs. Grey game is also at Lynnwood, which has much less seating/parking than Comcast Arena, so take that into consideration if you're planning on attending. Also, while admission to the game is free, the Tips will be collecting donations for families displaced by the July 9 fire at Lynnview Apartments in Lynnwood. ...

Chris de la Lande not returning

Posted at 2:43 pm by Nick Patterson

The Tips lost another overager as defenseman Chris de la Lande has decided not to return for his 20-year-old season.

De la Lande called Everett general manager Doug Soetaert on Friday to deliver the news. De la Lande told Soetaert a combination of factors led him to remain home in Winnipeg, either to go to school or go to work with his dad.

De la Lande spent three seasons with the Tips, appearing in 171 games. Last season in 71 games he had two goals and 17 assists.

The loss of de la Lande is a significant blow to Everett's defense as he was a veteran top-four defenseman. It's wouldn't have been as big a deal had fellow overage candidate Curtis Kulchar decided to return, as there might only have been one roster spot available between the two anyway. But the loss of both means that the Tips are going to have a vacancy in their top four this season. The timing on de la Lande's decision is also problematic as it didn't give the Tips much time for a contingency plan.

Everett still looks solid with their top three defensemen: Ryan Murray, Rasmus Rissanen and Alex Theriau. The Tips are going to need one of returners Paul Sohor and Gabe Minville to step capably into the top four, and prospective rookies Evan Morden and Nicholas Walters will need to be ready to play immediately.

As for the overager situation, Everett suddenly has openings. The Tips had six potential overagers returning from last season. However, de la Lande, Kulchar and Dan Iwanski are not coming back, and Radko Gudas is off to the professional ranks. That leaves center Clayton Cumiskey and goaltender Thomas Heemskerk, and Heemskerk is still a candidate to play professionally as well (and may be traded even if he's sent back). The Tips probably don't need another overage forward as they have plenty of options up front, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Tips are now on the lookout for an overage d-man. ...

Where are they now: Damir Alic

Posted at 11:41 am by Nick Patterson

Just two more days before players report for training camp.

In the meantime, here's an update on former Tip Damir Alic. Alic was a center who played for Everett from 2005-07. He was notable for being a member of the famed's "Joe Line," he was the first Washington state resident to suit up for the Tips, and he somehow fit in a full class load at the University of Washington during the 2006-07 season.

Well, I received a e-mail informing me that Alic was one of two UW students to earn a $3,000 scholarship from Skanska, a local construction company. Alic also was offered an internship with Skanska, and he's currently working on Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. He's on schedule to graduate next spring. ...

Preseason live blog set, plus promotions/ticket info

Posted at 10:35 am by Nick Patterson

I received enough positive feedback that I've decided to forge ahead with the preseason live blog, giving the fans a chance to chat a little hockey before training camp starts. Feel free to stop by, ask me questions and converse with your fellow fans. Like with away games, the first 25 readers who provide user names will be unmoderated and be able to post at will.

The Tips have also announced some promotional/ticket information the past 24 hours. This season's promotional schedule includes 23 of the 36 home dates -- with Shane Harper, Radko Gudas and Kent Simpson being the bobblehead honorees this season -- and single-game tickets go on sale next Friday. ...

Tips training camp schedule set

Posted at 1:15 pm by Nick Patterson

The Tips have announced their training camp schedule for next week. One-ice sessions take place Thursday through Saturday at Lynnwood Ice Center, beginning at 9 a.m. each day and continuing until 6:15 p.m. The Green vs. Grey game follows at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, also at Lynnwood. All sessions are open to the public free of charge, though the team is soliciting donations for the American Red Cross during the Green vs. Grey game.

If you want to get a glimpse of the veterans, you'll have to show up bright and early as the Tips practices open each day at 9 a.m. The four teams of rookies have scrimmages beginning at 10:45 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. each day. There's also a Tips workout session scheduled for 2 p.m., but I'm pretty sure that an off-ice session.

We're just one week away from players reporting. ...

John Becanic landing in Vancouver?

Posted at 10:43 am by Nick Patterson

Wonder what's going on with former Everett coach John Becanic? Gregg Drinnan (link at left) is reporting that Becanic is about to be hired by the Vancouver Giants as an assistant coach.

Becanic played a key role in Everett's formative years, serving as Kevin Constantine's right-hand man as the Tips' top assistant. When Constantine returned to the professional ranks after four seasons, Becanic assumed the head-coaching position. However, the Tips were plagued by inconsistency during Becanic's two season at the helm, and after the 2008-09 season he was dismissed.

Becanic, who still had one season left on his contract with Everett, spent last season as an assistant with the Seattle Thunderbirds. The T-birds did not retain his services.

This would be a great situation for Becanic. He would get to work with Don Hay, who was the inspiration for his decision to transition from firefighting to coaching hockey. He would also remain within a reasonable distance as his family is still locally based. ...

Live blog warm-up?

Posted at 10:55 am by Nick Patterson

The hockey season is right around the corner (yesterday I was pondering the oddity that it was 90 degrees outside and hockey was beginning in little more than a week). The Silvertips players report for training camp next Wednesday and take the ice for the first time on Thursday. Remember, because of scheduling conflicts training camp takes place at Lynnwood Ice Center this year rather than at Comcast Arena.

The location change might have some effect on my coverage this year, as I don't believe Lynnwood Ice Center has easy internet access available. Hopefully I'll be able to procure the right technology so I can live blog during camp anyway, but even if I don't expect to have as convenient a view of the action.

Speaking of live blogging, I thought it might be a good idea to host a live blog prior to the start of training camp. That would give the readers a forum not only for asking me questions about the upcoming season, but also to get those hockey juices flowing.

So what I'm looking for is feedback on whether anyone's interested in that, and if so when would be the best time. I'm thinking of hosting an hour next week, probably on Tuesday, and I can do it either in the afternoon or evening. So are you interested, and what works for you?

Ryan Murray hoists the trophy

Posted at 9:42 am by Nick Patterson

The Ryan Murray-led Canadian U-18 team claimed the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Slovakia, defeating the United States 1-0 in today's championship game. Murray, the Silvertips' star defenseman, was Canada's captain. Canada won the game on a goal from Red Deer's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

This was a far better international experience than Murray's first stint with Canada's U-18 team, when the Canadians were threatened with relegation at the U-18 World Championships last spring. Murray, who was the youngest player on the team, would seem to have a bright future with Hockey Canada, and the next question is how soon he'll start getting consideration for World Juniors. ...

Curtis Kulchar headed to college

Posted at 10:12 am by Nick Patterson

Defenseman Curtis Kulchar has decided to begin his schooling rather than return to Everett as an overager.

Kulchar, who was acquired midway through last season, had one goal and five assists in 32 games with the Tips. Everett general manager Doug Soetaert said he wanted Kulchar back for next season. However Kulchar, who was traded four times during his four-year WHL career, decided he wanted to be closer to his family in Saskatchewan. Soetaert did not know what college Kulchar planned on attending, and the Tips have left the door open for Kulchar to return should he change his mind.

Kulchar was a positive influence in the locker room upon his arrival, and he raised his performance during the playoffs, filling in admirably on the first pairing after Radko Gudas was injured. Everett still has plenty of defensive depth returning from last season, but Kulchar would have been a nice steadying presence.

Kulchar becomes the second potential overager no longer in Everett's mix. Earlier in the offseason left wing Dan Iwanski was released. That leaves the Tips with four candidates for three spots: center Clayton Cumiskey, defensemen Gudas and Chris de la Lande, and goaltender Thomas Heemskerk. However, both Gudas and Heemskerk have signed professional contracts. Gudas is nearly a lock to play pro, and Soetaert described Heemskerk as a 50-50 chance. So it appears the overage situation has sorted itself out, with Cumiskey and de la Lande penciled in and the third spot held for Heemskerk for the time being. Everett's plan is still to go with Kent Simpson as the No. 1 goalie whether Heemskerk returns or not, so you could interpret the situation as if the Tips have an open overage spot. But Soetaert said he'd be comfortable with forging ahead with just two overagers if that's how things played out. ...

Back in the game

Posted at 1:07 pm by Nick Patterson

I'm back from vacation, and here's a quick recap of what happened with the Tips while I was gone.

- Defenseman Ryan Murray not only was selected for Canada's U-18 team for the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, he was named captain. His progress at the tournament, which is now underway, can be followed at the Hockey Canada website.

- Everett has a new goaltending coach as the Tips hired Jordan Sigalet. Sigalet, who played one game in the NHL, is currently a co-owner and instructor at the B.C.-based Pro Formance Goalie School.

Frankly, I'm not certain what Everett's goaltending coach situation was prior to Sigalet's hiring. Shane Clifford had been Everett's goalie coach, but last season it was Corey Schwab, the goaltending development coach for the San Jose Sharks, who was around working with Everett's netminders. Schwab, who lives in the area, attended practices because of the presence of Sharks signee Thomas Heemskerk, and Schwab spent much more hands-on time with Everett's goalies than the Pittsburgh-based Clifford did in the past. Sigalet, being based in the Vancouver area, should also be able to attend practices frequently.

- The Tampa Bay Lightning signed Radko Gudas to a three-year entry-level contract. Tampa Bay selected the Tips defenseman in the third round of this year's NHL draft.

The signing doesn't really change Gudas' status with the Tips. Signing a deal clears the way for the 20-year-old Gudas to play in the AHL this season, but the Tips were expecting that anyway, and signed players can still be sent back to juniors. Gudas remains a longshot to play in Everett this season.

Just 16 more days until players report for training camp. ...
